“Pork Rinds…Gakkkk!!” I still remember the scene in “Big” with Tom Hanks. Perfect comic timing with that can of silly string.

Driving across the state of Missouri, you see a lot of strange, unappealing, offbrand snacks in service stations. (I am not prejudiced against offbrands ok. Some of my best friends are offbrands.) Anyway I was sure buying these flavored pork rinds would be another of the many mistakes. However (and this all depends on whether you would buy pork rinds in the first place) this Chili-Lime flavor of the Turkey Creek Fried Pork Skins were excellent. It took reminding myself of what I was eating in order to stop crunching. My animal instincts were in full force. ‘Twas the right amount of heat and citrus for any snack. To many, pork rinds are disgusting. And part of me is in that camp. Still, I can eat them just like I can eat bacon occasionally. I think the ingredients in this bag could definitely be a little better (based on my memory of the label). I haven’t compared this brand with others so it might be in line with the standard pork rind process.

This is the flavor for this snack. While Spitz Dill Pickle is THE flavor for sunflower seeds, from now on Chili-lime is hereby the official flavor for pork rinds. Others either cannot properly mask the gameyness or they just burn your face off. (Update: They have a Salt & Vinegar version. We may have a contender here, I’ll see if I can get some.)

A word about the packaging. My opinion, they are undermining their snack ideas with subpar packaging. The design is too obvious with the outlined pig, lime and pepper illustration on the transparent bag. Maybe they are targeting people who really love pork rinds, but as a pork rind skeptic, I almost didn’t buy these due to the cheap design. Perhaps they could experiment with an opaque light brown or white packaging, putting some thought in the typography and pointing out the uniqueness of this flavor. Also the Turkey Creek bag logo needs some help. They are paying a lot of money for the full color logo to be shown and it doesn’t work on the bag well. Maybe I will eventually develop brand affinity for them, who knows.

These are one of my absolute favorites of all time. The reason the name “Melonpan” for these Japanese breads? Because the size/shape is like melon. And the Japanese word ‘pan’ is bread. So you could translate this to ‘melon-shaped bread’. It falls in the breakfast bread category.

This sweet bread has a sugary coating that adheres to itself creating a flaky thick ’shell’ of sorts. Add the chocolate chips and you’ve just given energy within the perfected texture. Love it. Love it. Love it. The softness of the bread and an outer crispness from the sugar crystals are two competing textures that balance well. Some photos here hopefully prove that it’s at least worthwhile treat. You can pick Melonpan up in packages at the grocery store in Japan or freshly baked in the donut / bread sections too. There are many flavors and styles of these and they are part of popular culture in Japan. Last comment, Melonpan like donuts don’t really offer nutrition. It’s all about enjoyment, and I suppose the fleeting energy from empty calories.

Bigger Bigger Bigger please. That’s my thinking on this very portable, very challenging plastic encased cold treat. So you get these in pairs, you rip them apart. The top section is scored and pops right off. You want to drink/eat this frozen shake right away but you can’t because it’s stone hard. About 4 minutes after you’ve left it sitting next to you, taunting your desires, you can finally squeeze out the goodness. I have tried and simply cannot describe eating this without disgusting descriptions ruining your experience. But it’s real good and I wish it were a larger single treat rather than a pair of extremely annoying ones. The plastic container is terrible. You’ll pop out your eyes trying to get to the last part. Hard to get at everything, and terrible to discard. Still it’s fun and novel and very much tastes like a chocolate shake. Love the taste, hate the packaging. Yum.

The Ice Box is a great way to ruin your teeth if you aren’t careful. It is also an excellent refreshment. Chunks of flavored ice with a sweet and tart flavor. Like tasty lemonade. Pictured here is the sour apple flavor. The chunks are always smaller than a marble and each cone-shaped container is enough for two people to enjoy if you don’t mind sharing. There must be a little salt in the mix to keep the ice a little soft at freezing temperature. (The same reason icecream stays softer than a rock in the freezer.)

It’s not advisable to chew ice if you ask any dentist. But Ice Box is to it’s credit softer ice in a cute convenient box. And it’s hard to not want to have another once you’ve found this snack. Unlike many snacks in Japan that just disappear, we have found them at 7-Eleven and the grocery stores in Japan for several years, though more available during the warmer months.

The flavors of Cheese, Pizza, Sour Cream, and may of the other novel flavors are terrible and I never eat them.

Finally I’ve found a flavor I enjoy enough to spend money on a can. The Pringles Sea Salt and Pepper, at least in this Japan edition have met the criteria. They do not have an overwhelming pepper taste, though you can see plenty of pepper grains on the chips. This is good because some snack chips with pepper do overwhelm. I hope I can find these stateside sometime again. Pringles are fun every few months or so in moderation.

If you are a fan of Japanese restaurants, you have seen or eaten Edamame for sure. If you drive through parts of Missouri or Kansas, you’ve also seen fields of soybeans. Americans don’t eat soybeans right out of the pods much. We mostly ingest them in secret ingredients. Edamame are also a common beer snack. These soybean pod crackers mimic real edamame in size and shape but are just a baked cracker with a texture similar to Pepperidge Farm Goldfish crackers. The edamame crackers do in fact taste a little like salted edamame, more than I expected. Mostly they are just a nice snack that replaces chips or pretzels quite well. Since I can’t translate the company name at the moment, I’ll leave that for later. Likely you won’t find them any time soon in the U.S anyway. However you can get lucky sometimes with these types of snacks as California distributors will help bring them into Asian supermarkets, which as you must know, are great places to get snacks.

We went to the Hakuen Shopu (100 yen shop (dollar store)) today. We looked at a number of very useless things. The snack section there is not bad, however you will find some obvious rejects. I’m not sure if this Crisp Crunch Coffee patty thing is a reject, though given its oddity, I’d suspect it. I have to be honest, the taste and texture aren’t too bad. Coffee is a lesser used snack flavor and tasty when paired with chocolate of course. If you like Star Crunch from Little Debbie, which has near the most disgusting unreal chocolate created, this one is quite good compared. We are all used to crispy chocolate candy stuff (Nestle Crunch bar, duh) but it’s just that something about this snack doesn’t scream delectable. But it’s fun and funny and has a cocoa / coffee taste, which I usually love. I had a few good bites out of it, so I wanted to share it. I definitely had to share the real thing, as I couldn’t eat this monster alone unless I was paid to do so. I searched the web to find it, but then I got tired. Some other snacks from its company Cisco’s are available online, maybe I’ll post it when I have time. (I’m lying, I’ll never have time.) If you are dying to try a snack that I don’t genuinely drool over, just because it has chocolate and coffee in it, I suppose you’ll find the energy to look it up on your own. I recommend you pick up something more beautiful from a decent chocolate retailer instead though.

I think its overall large size and number of seemingly healthy nut imagery shown on the package were most influential. It was a little pricey at Target, near the $2.00 range. (Pricey as compared to a Snickers I’m saying.) I want to rate this one pretty well. As I don’t have a rating scale, I’ll make one up for this and say 3.8 stars out of 5. Nearly a four and could be a 4.2 depending on the person.

I loved the dark chocolate used. It was a Dove-like chocolate, not too thick coating with enough delicious bitterness to it. That’s where it beats most other chocolate/nut bars IMHO.

The bar felt lighter than it looked likely due to the popcorn inside. That was a pleasant surprise for me. It is a good filler I think. Much better than being stuffed with more sugary goo or peanuts. Basically it’s less sweet and a hint more salt flavoring comes through. It might have less salt than other bars, but made more noticeable in this bar. Best to get the exact sodium comparison if you car. I didn’t. It’s more healthy I suppose with the ingredients than other bars, but it’s obviously still a candy bar so don’t kid yourself.

Anyway I’ve been letting up on my sugar intake lately. Not because of calories, but just overall health consciousness. Still I’m glad I splurged for this snack. It was fun and seems to be easier to eat in multiple sessions because of the nice tray included in the package. Were they thinking of that, or was the tray just to prevent breakage? Doesn’t matter, it worked. See if your local Target has this bar if you’re interested. Apparently the Moose Munch brand is from Harry and David, but I can’t find this candy bar on the site at the time of writing. Other websites that talk about this bar, show me that it’s been around for a while. But I think the latest graphics on the bar are better than previous designs. I care about that kind of thing for some reason.

I was watching the episode of Dirty Jobs the other day where Mike Rowe goes to the honey farm and helps extract the honey. He’s working the family’s farmers market table and tells a customer “It’s organic!” but the family quickly corrects him. I didn’t recall if they explained why honey is not organic. It didn’t make sense at first. I mean it comes from bees and flowers right? I eat it with my peanut butter sandwiches. I assumed whatever honey I bought had one ingredient in it and it was all just a question of ounces and packaging.

The reason why honey at least in the United States shouldn’t and can’t be labeled organic is that we are too industrialized. And the bees who are buzzing from field to field before aren’t carrying passports before they get to the hive. That means all the farmland they’ve been buzzing over, it is assumed was cultivated with pesticides. Not too appealing unfortunately. I’m not giving up on honey just yet, but it’s nice to learn a little about it. This honey article from the San Francisco Chronicle is where I learned a little bit more. Check it out if you want a sweet taste of honey politics, regulations and label lies.

Oh cool, pretzel waves. Seems like a good idea. A wave is like an oceans way of saying “Hello, hope you like salt up your nose.”
If I were to drag you across Mexico and leave you for dead in the desert, you might be thinking that the experience was a little like the last time you bit into a Rold Gold Garlic Pretzel Wave. No amount of added water will ever balance them to make them edible. I actually think that these bring a choking risk with them because they are so dry. The garlic coating was no help. The flavor was boring and I couldn’t get over the dryness.

But I think it was a good try. Crack open one of these in your hands and it creates a new layer of atmosphere where no life can exist. You have been warned. Don’t fret Rold Gold/Frito Lay, I still love your snacks, but I must ‘wave’ goodbye to this particular one forever.
