Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Though the finding of a gray hair and fear of aging likely spawned the author to write it, this article has some good snack ideas and interesting mentions of health studies. I enjoyed it. Hopefully you will too.

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

I’m not stealing this idea. I wanted to share it with you in case you like to make your own desserts. These look so good, like something inside the glass case at Panera. The recipe comes from a website called smittenkitchen.

Open Source Food website

I love nearly all things open source. It means that you know the components that make up the device, er, the meal. Check out opensourcefood.com. I’ve linked to the snack tag, hopefully it will fill up with all kinds of great things to make and enjoy.

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Divine Caroline, a website lists a good collection of snack and regular foods that you might want to consider. 20 Healthiest Foods under a dollar. This is timely information for me, as I need some inspiration for some important sustenance I’ll be needing on an upcoming wilderness camping trip. More on that later.

Make your own cola

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

WikiHow is fun. It’s a community tutorial wiki site. Being a wiki, anyone can change the text themselves in the web browser to improve on each of the tutorials for everyone else. Delicious concept. Also an occasional source of humor such as the useful How to sneak candy into your room. This article on creating OpenCola was the perfect one to share here at Snackhunting. I love the idea that we can be snack innovators. Open Cola, unlike say Coca Cola is a recipe that you can copy, modify and share. Open, unlocked, free. If you like, you can even start a company and sell it. You’ll have no royalties to pay. Most people probably won’t do that because most people don’t want to be in the soda business. But we all want to snack on good drinks. Plus, the ingredients call for Granulated sugar, not corn syrup. Depending on what your take on corn syrup is, you may turn to Open Cola above the more popular drinks. As my good friend Tim from back in my movie theater days would say, “Mmmm, good soda!”

Here’s a recipe for Open Cola from WikHow

Wasa Rye Crackers and Hummus - a healthy quick snack

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

I’ve been on a diet lately. Let me rephrase that. I’ve been depriving myself lately. Yes that feels more honest. I’m trying to lose some weight before a vacation. I need to fit into that suit that I used to fit into. So that means that snackhunting for me gets a little greener and a little less sweet. Despite my current predicament, I want to recommend a snack I’ve liked even before this diet, but has made a comeback for me because of it.

Next time you hit the grocery store, see what kind of selection they have in hummus. If you’ve never heard of hummus, I wouldn’t be surprised. Though it shows up at dinner parties, I don’t find that many people have it sitting around. It’s made from chick peas, also known as garbanzo beans. It’s a pasty dip-like concoction with a Mediterranean origin I think. The legume properties of this snack are a plus right away. You can get a lot of different flavors, one example being sun-dried tomato. Many people will put hummus out with pita chips for people to snack on at a gathering. But let me just say that you can do better. Try to find some Wasa Hearty Rye Crackers. I won’t pretend they will be easy to find at your local market. But you might get lucky. These crackers are definitely hearty and many would even say Flavor Free. But when paired with the hummus, they become the snack they always dreamed of being.

If you want to try my favorite hummus, try out Wild Garden brand. I won’t say they are better than others, because I’ve only had three kinds of hummus, however their Roasted Red Pepper hummus is delicious on the rye crackers.

Break one of the large crackers into about four pieces and just dip in the hummus and enjoy. I’ve used it as a good after-work treat recently. But any time of day you need just a few seconds and it’s a much better choice than chips or candy. I love the flavor and it has become a staple in the house for the wife and me.

Celebrating the Mojito

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

I’ve only had the pleasure of one of these beverages in my life but I recommend them.  I recommend them over nearly any type of martini.  Does an alcoholic drink really deserve to be on a snack hunting website?  Well, perhaps it doesn’t fit perfectly snug in here next to the Nutter Butters and the pita chips, but I’ll make an exception.  A mojito is a rum based drink with spearmint leaves crushed inside.  It’s very refreshing and I think one could definitely create fun variations from it.

Here’s a link about the mojito from everyone’s favorite accuracy challenged site wikipedia. (I love that site along with it’s imperfections.

Here’s how to make a mojito from the food network, and here’s a wikibook on making a mojito.
