Triscuits, welcome back into my life

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

A triscuit is an easy snack to forget. It’s usually sitting idly underneath a small cut of cheese or getting spread over with a fancy party dip. It has never been a snack in of itself for me. What about you? I’d be better off doing research before making comments about how boring triscuits were intended to be, unchanged for centuries maybe. It doesn’t matter anymore. It doesn’t matter because these three new tastes are making me happy. Nabisco must have bought a new olive squeezer because all three of the triscuit flavors are made with olive oil. Allow me to share with you my psychic prediction of your next wheat cracker purchase. You will enjoy one of the following:

Tasty new triscuits

Triscuit Cracked Pepper and Olive Oil
Triscuit Rosemary and Olive Oil
Triscuit Fire Roasted Tomato

The Fire Roasted version has a little too much flavor where it overwhelms and can taste a little cheap after a couple of them. I think you can counter that with the right topping though and fundamentally, the flavor is good. I truly can’t decide between the Rosemary or the Cracked pepper flavor as to which is my favorite. Just be careful though. Too much wheat can, you know, slow the intestines down.

Wasa Rye Crackers and Hummus - a healthy quick snack

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

I’ve been on a diet lately. Let me rephrase that. I’ve been depriving myself lately. Yes that feels more honest. I’m trying to lose some weight before a vacation. I need to fit into that suit that I used to fit into. So that means that snackhunting for me gets a little greener and a little less sweet. Despite my current predicament, I want to recommend a snack I’ve liked even before this diet, but has made a comeback for me because of it.

Next time you hit the grocery store, see what kind of selection they have in hummus. If you’ve never heard of hummus, I wouldn’t be surprised. Though it shows up at dinner parties, I don’t find that many people have it sitting around. It’s made from chick peas, also known as garbanzo beans. It’s a pasty dip-like concoction with a Mediterranean origin I think. The legume properties of this snack are a plus right away. You can get a lot of different flavors, one example being sun-dried tomato. Many people will put hummus out with pita chips for people to snack on at a gathering. But let me just say that you can do better. Try to find some Wasa Hearty Rye Crackers. I won’t pretend they will be easy to find at your local market. But you might get lucky. These crackers are definitely hearty and many would even say Flavor Free. But when paired with the hummus, they become the snack they always dreamed of being.

If you want to try my favorite hummus, try out Wild Garden brand. I won’t say they are better than others, because I’ve only had three kinds of hummus, however their Roasted Red Pepper hummus is delicious on the rye crackers.

Break one of the large crackers into about four pieces and just dip in the hummus and enjoy. I’ve used it as a good after-work treat recently. But any time of day you need just a few seconds and it’s a much better choice than chips or candy. I love the flavor and it has become a staple in the house for the wife and me.
